ANC infighting burst into the open in North West on Sunday and police had to use rubber bullets and stun grenades to disperse disgruntled party members at a Provincial General Council meeting at Madikwe near Rusternburg.

At least 500 members chanted slogans opposing ANC provincial chairperson Supra Mahumapelo and President Jacob Zuma.

Members of the ANC from various regions of the North West province continued to dance and sang freedom outside the main gate of the hall here in Madikwe.

They say members attending the meeting from the hall are not legitimate delegates from branches. They accuse Mahumapelo of dividing the organisation in the province.

As the demonstration continued, thousands of ANC members continued with their meeting despite the clashes between other members with police.

One person was injured after being shot by rubber bullet. Meanwhile, the SABC was not welcomed to cover the violence outside the hall.
