I am inspired by Mr Dondo Mogajane

OPINION BY Michael Mayalo – My lifetime role model and hero: Mr Dondo Mogajane

As a young social entrepreneur and an activist I have always been filled with the notion of making life better for those around me if it is within my power or limited means. At high school my desire to make a difference became more formalised and I had the great opportunity to lead the biggest student movement in Africa , Congress of South African Students in different ranks up to national level - a student leadership development organisation with a strong socio poltical slant.

It was exactly in my high school years when I used to do a lot of reading; I saw prominent articles about the mighty Dondo Mogajane whom was serving as the director general in that era.

Mr. Mogajane has two honours degrees in Public Management and Human Resources and Industrial Relations obtained at the University of Durban Westville. He also completed a Master’s degree in Public Management at the University of Maryland (USA), a Management Advancement Programme at Wits Business School and a Programme in Budgeting and Public Financial Management at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

Inspiration is the inculcation of a spirit that motivates a person to do something in his/her life. It is most important for everyone in our lives. This inspiration changes the way we think about our life, It helps in moving forward in our life by removing all the life hurdles in a positive way. When we observe some good qualities in others we want to do the same in our life, It changes our perspective of living.

This can only happen when we get inspired by people or thing that makes us think positive as well as motivate us for doing something, We need it most when we are depressed or sad by some failure or great loss in life and It is the inspiration only that makes us strong again to fight the battle of our life. Inspiration is that idea that can change the lives of many people.

As a powerful business leader it is amazing to me to see Mr Dondo Mogajane’s humanity, how he would be the first to say sorry . Those who interact with him daily tells me how he often wanders around amongst his staff to see for himself the work conditions etc his staff encounters.

In my talks also with those who interacts daily with Mr Dondo Mogajane , one of the things which really stands out for me is when many people tell me although having been subjected to the most shocking insults in the media for standing up to the abuse by mainstream media , Mr Dondo refuses to descend to the level of his enemies and continue to manage his subordinates always in a manner that protects and enhances their dignity.

I did a mini research about Mr Dondo from amongst those who know him well as I wanted to know where does his abilty to be so bold and fearless in the face of oppression of our people comes from , I find he gets his strength from his faith, a faith based upon justice for all and Mr Mogajane knows that there can be no peace without justice, there can be no real freedom without justice.

I have been inspired by a number of people and instances in my life; Inspiration to me is like a catalyst that awakens my power and ability to work. The biggest inspiration in my life is none other than people who play a positive impact in our country and the person I admire the most is Mr Mogajane - He is the one who has inspired me from my childhood, His qualities like hard-working nature, discipline, sacrifice, and sympathy inspire me a lot.

When I grow up , I want to be like Mr Dondo Mogajane.

Some of our current learners don't take education serious

Thuso Thebe High School learners vandalized school properties and police transports during protest on Thursday last week

Some of parents support that learners for vandalize school properties, how can  you support learners for vandalize school properties for cellphones ? , that means cellphones is more important than their education, we must not encourage learners for violence that means we will have nation that believes in violence in order to be heard, that cannot be correct at all, our generation must change situation that we facing in our schools, universities and community without violence but negotiations, let us change our mindset before is be too late, we must now or never, violence cannot solve problems, yesterday I've attended meeting at Thuso Thebe High School, Area Manager of Kagisano Molopo sub-district Mr Makhado, that based at Tlakgameng villange, I'm concern as community member and former leader of Congress of South African Students (COSAS) within Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati region-North West, our learners lost direction and that must corrected before is be too late. Learners must be corrected now or never, that learners violated their own right to be educated.

Political school and leadership training at Sebetwane Secondary School.

I like to take this moment to greet you in your name and in the name of learners organization COngress of South African Students (COSAS).

Political school

As former leadership of COngress of South African Students of Sebetwane and Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati Regional deputy chairperson, I stand before you to give you understanding about this big organization, this organization was formed to campaign the interests of learners, generation of Cde Ephraim Mogale played their part, now you must play your part, what you do during your generation will determine your role within this organization.

You must recruit learners to this big organization of learners, you must recruit as many as you can so that this organization will lead learners forever you pave way for coming generation so that things will be smooth in school, COSAS is still relevant because learners pay school fees hence education system is poor, we concern about our education system that is not quality enough and compulsory to all, in most cases is black children suffering in terms of education especially the one that live in the rural areas.

Leadership training

We need leadership that will put interests of its members first, is type of leadership that we need, COSAS is here to teach you because known as primary school of politics of African National Congress, leadership must treat all members equal, even if other don't support you but you mustn't take things by heart so that you will manage to lead this big organization that play good role within ANC, what you do now you will continue with even if you old, what is important is to be grow politically, but if you refuse to be old enough politically is challenge and that means you dangerous to yourself and to the organization.

Now is time to learn things, you must know your role within the organization as leadership, if you know your role that means you product that we need within organization, you must state leading yourself before you lead other people but if you fail to lead yourself that means you will fail to lead other people, self discipline is key, if you cannot discipline yourself that means you dangerous to yourself and  to the organization, you cooperation is appreciated.

Challenges that South Africa facing currently

thatoyaone moepetsane
According to reports of last year about South African education compared to  global education, our education is low and our government must do something so that we will achieve quality education, now is time to stand up and change education system that not benefit poor of the poorest in terms of education black child suffer. Our economy is higher than education, countries that realize that education is weapon to fight poverty invest in education, South Africa must establish independent structures that will make monitor education in our schools especially rural areas schools but in partnership with learners structure like RCL and COSAS so that structures will work hand in hand with that

independent monitoring education structure, government must introduce subjects that will help learners that Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Geography, Accounting, Business Studies, Economics etc so that they will also have plans too, our  country really need new and energetic leaders that will think about people especially future of the country which is learners because Oliver Reginald Tambo and Nelson Mandela they saw things with other especially in that issue of education and according to history they put people's interests first, which is good things not leadership that we having currently, leadership that put their interests instead of putting people's interests first. Our country is in the wrong hands hence this country have leadership that can lead this country and think about people who elected them. We must work together in order to build future of the coming generation so that they will continue and come up with the new ideas  that will move that country forward, now is time for the change, this is our country and is our duty to make sure that we live equally, the fact is that we are not equal we just dream equality, if poor person commit the same crime as reach person judgment will never be the same, poor one can be 25 years imprisonment but the reach one can imprisonment for

less than 10 years. We are not all beneficiary of that freedom in the most cases benefit reach people and some of political leadership that are in power that means that freedom we are not benefit all, we just dreaming freedom because our economy is still in the hands of minority that means benefit minority now is time for build communist state so that we will all benefit, we can have political freedom but that political freedom not benefit people, we have high rate of youth unemployment and thousands of graduated that are unemployed, our economy still  controlled by minority, in communist state all people benefit not minority but majority, in most cases is black children suffer most than white children, 95% of youth unemployment is black and colored but is only 5% of white children that are unemployed because they have advantage of farms and top industries. Infrastructure is also challenge especially in the rural area in the North West-Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati Region-Kagisano Molopo sub-region. Lets go to vote during voting day in order to have voice, if you'll not vote you must not complain and you'll be voiceless because you didn't vote for organization that will campaign your interests and South African interests your vote will make difference and move this country forward as mirror of the society I'll never encourage anyone to vote for any organization.

COURT BLOCKS APPEAL AGAINST JANUSZ WALUS PAROLE ORDER

The justice minister was on Thursday refused permission to appeal against a court order that he must release Chris Hani’s murderer Janusz Walus on parole

Justice and Correctional Services Minister Michael Masutha had challenged Judge Nicolene Janse van Nieuwenhuizen’s ruling that his decision to overturn the parole board’s decision to have Walus released was irrational.
  • Bobby' Kennedy's 1968 assassination cited as a test case in parole bid by Hani killer
Counsel for the minister‚ Marumo Moerane SC‚ had argued in the High Court in Pretoria on Tuesday that there was no justification for Janse van Nieuwenhuizen’s ruling.
  • Vavi: SACP died with Chris Hani in 1993
Asking Janse van Nieuwenhuizen for leave to appeal against her judgment to the full bench‚ Moerane said the judge did not distinguish between rationality and reasonableness in her judgment.
  • We need another Hani now‚ says Nzimande
“They are lumped together in one sentence.”
Moerane said Masutha’s decision to refuse to release Walus on parole was not unreasonable.
“The ladyship’s finding that the minister’s decision was irrational and unreasonable was a misdirection‚” Moerane argued.
Walus’ advocate‚ Roelof du Plessis SC‚ had on Tuesday submitted that an offender was still being punished if he was released on parole but that the focus upon release shifted to the rehabilitation of the offender.

Du Plessis said there were no prospects of success in an appeal and urged the court to dismiss the application for leave to appeal.
Walus was sentenced to death in 1993 for the murder of Hani‚ who was the secretary-general of the South African Communist Party‚ a member of the African National Congress’s national executive committee and uMkhonto we Sizwe leader.

Walus’ sentence was commuted to life imprisonment after the Constitutional Court declared in 1995 that capital punishment was inconsistent with the Constitution.
Du Plessis said the retributive and deterrence aspects of the sentence became less important after a person had served a lengthy prison term.
Du Plessis said the court had been correct in finding that Masutha’s April 2015 decision in which he refused to place Walus on parole was irrational and unreasonable.
“Justice has been done and justice is still being done even if this man gets parole‚” Du Plessis said.

SA GRADE 9 AVERAGE 10.8% FOR MATHS

SA Grade 9s average 10.8% for maths
Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has released the Annual National Assessments (ANA) results for 2014, which show that the average performance in Grade 9 mathematics is 10.8%.
Motshekga explained that the idea of ANA is to gauge the extent to which the basic education system is impacting on the critical areas of numeracy and literacy.
“ANA is a diagnostic tool to help the sector to self-correct. In fact, ANA results have become a powerful tool of assessing the health of our basic education system,” she said.
The ANA showed the following average national performance per grade:

GradeLiteracyNumeracy
163%68%
261%62%
356%56%
457%37%
557%37%
663%43%
948%11%

The DA said that it was saddened, but not surprised, at the very low Grade 9 numeracy and literacy levels.
Only 3% of Grade 9 learners achieved 50% or more in mathematics, and the average for literacy in their home languages was only 48%,” said the DA.
The minister said that at the Grade 9 level the results show a trend of underperformance both in language and mathematics.
“Our Achilles’ heel remains the unacceptably low performance in Grade 9 mathematics,” said Motshekga.

“All ANA results and diagnostic reports have flagged the problem of mathematics teaching and learning throughout the system.”
“This calls for “Business Unusual” if we are to take head on what remains the elephant in the room – learners’ poor grasp of mathematical concepts, and teachers’ apparent lack of requisite academic level in mathematics to teach Grade 9 mathematics.”
“These are the twin limitations that we must confront if we are to take the system out of this quagmire.”

The National Professional Teachers’ Organisation of SA (Naptosa) said the administration of the ANA was a huge undertaking considering that the ANA was written by approximately seven million pupils from Grade One to Nine at both public and subsidised private schools.
“Educators, school managers, and departmental officials must be complimented on the accomplishment of such a mammoth task,” said union president Basil Manuel.
“Naptosa noted that the department of basic education interventions in numeracy and literacy had resulted in improved learner performance in some grades.”
He said the union believed focused interventions on content knowledge and skills, both in numeracy and literacy, were needed in the foundation phase to ensure a strong basis for mathematics in the higher grades.
“The poor result of 11 percent in mathematics in Grade Nine is of concern to Naptosa, there is clearly something amiss in the senior phase”, he said.

SOUTH AFRICA BOTTOM OF GLOBAL MATHS AND SCIENCE LIST

SA bottom of global maths and science list

The World Economic Forum (WEF) has released its Global Information Technology Report 2015, which ranked South Africa last in the quality of mathematics and science education.
South Africa also finished close to last – 139 out of 143 countries – when looking at the overall quality of its education system.
The WEF’s Global Information Technology Report 2015 ranks SA’s mathematics and science education quality lower than Angola, the Dominican Republic, and Mozambique.
It should be noted that these rankings are based on the perceptions of business leaders, and make use of the WEF’s annual “Executive Opinion Survey” to establish how well a country’s education system is performing.
In this survey the opinions of business leaders are gathered on a variety of topics.
The WEF’s education quality rankings are therefore not an assessment of the actual quality of mathematics and science education (see Is SA bottom of the class in maths and science?)
.

Why SA’s education system is seen as poor

It is not difficult to see why South African business leaders think we have one of the worst education systems in the world.
The Trends in Mathematics and Science Studies (TIMSS) results show that South Africa’s performance is very close to the bottom of the surveyed countries.
South Africa’s poor performance in mathematics and science education quality was highlighted in the first three TIMSS reports – 1995, 1999, and 2002.
What happened in 2002 is that grade nine students in South Africa started to write the grade eight tests.
The reason was simple: the grade eight TIMSS assessment was too difficult for eighth grade students in South Africa.
In 2011 South Africa was only one of three countries – along with Botswana and Honduras – where grade nine students did the grade eight tests.

TIMMS from 1995
TIMMS from 1995

This did not do much to improve SA’s overall ranking. South Africa’s performance was so poor that the grade eight students of all the participating countries, except Ghana, outperformed South Africa’s grade nine students.
“A striking feature of the mathematics and science scores is that the average scale score of the top seven countries exceeds South African performance at the 95th percentile,” the Human Science Research Council stated.
“This means that the most proficient learners in South Africa approached the average performance in Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Republic of Korea, Japan, Finland, Slovenia and Russian Federation.”
To put South Africa’s latest TIMSS results in context – our grade nine students performed worse than grade eight students in other developing countries such as Morocco, Indonesia, Tunisia and Lebanon.
This should concern the country’s education department.

DISTURBING MATHS RESULTS AMONGS SA MATRICULANTS

Disturbing maths results among SA matriculants
Delving deeper into the South African matric results of 2014 depicts an education system in crisis, according to the DA.
In January, the department of education announced that 75.8% of matriculants passed their 2014 National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams.
However, taking into account the number of drop-outs over the past 12 years, the real number of  learners who managed to get a senior certificate sits quite a bit lower – at approximately 41.7%.
A reply to a DA parliamentary question revealed that more than half of the 75.8% of learners who passed were effectively grade-appropriately innumerate and fewer learners are taking the subjects that are required to address this country’s critical skills shortage.
The DA noted that just under 10,500 learners failed Mathematics and 49,556 failed Mathematical Literacy.
“This means that 28% of all learners writing matric last year failed any form of numeracy assessment. What is more startling is that 70% of all learners failed to achieve above 50% for any form of numeracy,” said Annette Lovemore, DA shadow minister of basic education.
In the case of Mathematics, 4,430 of the learners enrolled to write, did not do so. For Mathematical Literacy, the situation was worse, with 6,261 enrolled learners not writing, the DA said.
“The obvious assumption is that these children were likely to fail, and were therefore precluded from writing so that they would not negatively influence their school’s pass rate.”
The political party highlighted a trend showing fewer learners are taking the subjects that are required to address the shortage of critical skills in SA:

15 MAY 2015 REPORT ABOUT SOUTH AFRICAN EDUCATION SYSTEM VS THE WORLD

South Africa’s education system vs the world
South Africa’s maths and science education has again been shown to be among the worst in the world – second last – according to the largest ever global school rankings.
A report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), put the country behind only Ghana, while Asian countries excelled, taking the top five places, while the US and the UK, were ranked 28th and 20th, respectively.
The OECD findings are based on the test scores of 15-year-olds from 76 countries.
The maths and science rankings were based on a combination of international assessments, the OECD’s PISA test, the TIMMS tests, and TERCE tests conducted in Latin America.
“This is the first time we have a truly global scale of the quality of education,” said the OECD.

In April, the World Economic Forum (WEF) released its Global Information Technology Report 2015, which ranked South Africa last in the quality of mathematics and science education.
South Africa also finished close to last – 139 out of 143 countries – when looking at the overall quality of its education system.

Further warning

The report’s authors sent out a stern warning to countries at the bottom of the ranking.
“There is no shortcut to improved learning outcomes in a post-2015 world economy where knowledge and skills have become the global currency, the key to better jobs and better lives.
“We cannot inherit this currency, and we can only develop it through sustained effort and investment in people.”

Potential

The report noted that the quality of schooling in a country is a powerful indicator of the wealth that countries will produce in the long run.
“Put the other way around, the economic output that is lost because of poor education policies and practices, leaves many countries what amounts to a permanent state of economic recession –  and one that can be larger and deeper than the one that resulted from the financial crisis at the beginning of the millennium, out of which many countries are still struggling to climb,” the OECD report said.
South Africa does show potential, ranking highly in potential GDP increase if all 15-year-olds achieved a basic level of education.
According to the report, the country has the second-most potential globally, and the country’s GDP would increase by 2,624% if education levels were increased over the lifetime of those pupils.

COSAS WESTERN CAPE IS CONCERN ABOUT ANYONE WHO ASSOCIATED WITH NYAOPE

CONGRESS OF SOUTH AFRICAN STUDENTS WESTERN CAPE PROVINCE
 "Sjambok anyone associated with nyaope"
26th April 2016 (Saturday)

Congress Of South African Students in the Western Cape (COSAS) has always been in the forefront of Championing the interest of All Scholars within the ranks of the Province, We Will Continue to be the light of the poor.
...
We have noted a "tokoloshe" that is slowly killing innocent scholars in our schools, defined as Nyaope, whoonga (sometimes spelt wunga) or BoMkon is a cheap drug and costs R20 to R30 per packet (or hit) and has been around since the early 2000s. It is a concoction of heroin, dagga and anything else the drug dealers can lay their hands on. The average addict would use five packets per day, which adds up to more than R150 per day, more than the average wage in the country. Some addicts smoke up to 10 packets per day.

Cde Michael Mayalo's photo. Scholars steal everything and from anyone to fund their drug habit, Once Nyaope is smoked, the user experiences intense euphoria, deep contentment and relaxation. The user feels warm when cold, calm when angry and filled when hungry. The feeling is beyond human experience and the intense effect lasts for about four hours. When this blissful state wears off after six to 24 hours , agonising withdrawal symptoms set in like severe abdominal pain and back ache, sweating, chills, anxiety, restlessness, depression, nausea and diarrhoea.

On a daily basis see police cruising around our School's with 4x4 police vans but that does not stop the drug dealers from selling to poor innocent scholars over school fences, this proves nothing about our South African Police Service being the weakest link in Africa, Our police service is nothing but useless including the so called mighty metro police.
As Congress Of South African Students in Western Cape (COSAS -WC) we haul a call on all scholars within the ranks of the province to join us in the fight to turn our schools to "Nyaope-free-zone", Sjambok anyone that you see selling nyaope or providing, together we can break the silence.
We think it's too bad that scholar's decided to turn on drugs, we don't think drugs are the problem, Crime is the problem, Police are the problem, money is the problem, but drugs are just drugs.
We can even make our own Sjamboks.

Lesson 8-Kc calculations

Lesson Notes

Kc calculations
Consider the following reaction:
N2(g)  +  3H2(g)    ↔      2NH3(g)
5 mol of N2 and 5 mol of H2 are injected into a 500 cm3 sealed empty container. Equilibrium is reached at 400 °C. After analysing the mixture, the mass of NH3 is 20,4 g.
Calculate the value of the equilibrium constant (Kc) at 400 °C.
 N23H22NH3
Initial550
Used/produced- 0, 6- 1, 8+ 1, 2
Equilibrium= 4, 4= 3, 2= 1, 2
Concentration at equilibrium= 8,8= 6,4= 2,4
n = m × M
= 20,4 / (14+3(1))
= 1, 2 mol
H2 n = 1,2 ÷ 2 × 3
= 1, 8 mol
N2 n = 1,2 ÷ 2
= 0, 6 mol
N2 c = n/V
= 4,4 / (500 ÷ 1000)
= 8,8 mol/dm3
H2 c = n/V
= 3,2 / (500 ÷ 1000)
= 6,4 mol/dm3
NH3 c = n/V
= 1,2 / (500 ÷ 1000)
= 2,4 mol/dm3
Kc = [products] / [reactants]
Kc  =  [NH3]2 / [N2][H2]3
= [2,4]2 / [8,8][6,4]3

EXAM-BASED QUESTIONS
Lesson 1
Study the following graph for the given reaction:
2AB3(g)        ↔  2AB2(g)  +  B2(g)
At the 4th minute the temperature was increased to 600 °C. Is the forward reaction exothermic or endothermic? Explain your answer.
Lesson 2
Consider the following reaction:
4NH3(g)  + 5 O2(g)    ↔     4NO(g)   +   6H2O(g)        ΔH
Why does a decrease in temperature not yield much NO gas?
Lesson 3
What does each of the following Kc values indicate:
Kc>  1
Kc  =  1
Kc
Lesson 4
Write down the Kc expression for the following reaction:
CaCO3(s)         ↔  CaO(s)  +  CO2(g)
If the Kc value is 0,018, calculate the concentration of CO2 present.
ANSWERS
Lesson 1
When the temperature is increased the system would like to decrease it by favouring the endothermic reaction.
The products decreased and the reactant increased, thus the reverse reaction was favoured.
Therefore the reverse reaction is endothermic and thus the forward reaction is exothermic.
Lesson 2
The forward reaction is exothermic. The forward reaction is favoured by cooling, but at a low temperature the rates of reactions are slow and it takes a long time for the system to reach equilibrium. So the amount of NO produced in a reasonable time is not economical.
Lesson 3
More products (forward reaction favoured)
Same amount of products and reactants
More reactants (reverse reaction favoured)
Lesson 4
Kc = [products] / [reactants]
Kc  =  [CO2]/ [1][1]
Kc  =  [CO2]
CO2 = 0,018 mol/dm3

ZCC STATEMENT ON CONSTITUTIONAL COURT RULLING & SACC STANCE

[ZCC STATEMENT ON CONSTITUTIONAL COURT RULING & SACC STANCE]

11 April 2016

The Zion Christian Church and its spiritual head, His Grace the Right Reverend Bishop, Dr Barnabas Lekganyane has noted the recent political developments sweeping our beloved country South Africa following pronouncements of the Constitutional Court regarding State President President Jacob luma and the National Assembly. In the aftermath of that historic ruling by the Constitutional Court, several religious leaders made statements regarding the matter under the auspices of the South African Council of Churches (SAGC) which the ZCC is not a member of. Among them was a male figure who paraded himself wearing ZCC insignia. As the said individual was part of the religious leaders making the call for President Jacob Zuma to resign and declaring that they rejected his apology, a wrong impression was created that the ZCC was part of the group.
We would like to categorically state it for the record that the person in question was not mandated nor appointed by the ZCC to represent it in that forum. Our internal processes to verify his membership of the ZCC are currently underway and we will deal with the matter internally. His conduct or presence at the said meeting wearing the church's emblem has brought the church into disrepute. We condemn his actions and distance ourselves and the spiritual head of the ZCC Bishop Lekganyane from same. We would like to reiterate our long-standing and inelastic policy that THE ZCC IS ABOVE POLITICS. This, because we believe that as a church, among our primary responsibilities is to pray for peace and stability. This we do by equitably prioritizing all traditional, political and government leaders in our prayers. It is only through God's powers that we know that this beloved land of ours experiences harmony.
Back in the early 1990s when the country was on the brink of a full-scale political war, Bishop Lekganyane convened leaders of all political parties to pray for peace in Moria. That was something that had never been done anywhere else. It is against this background that we want to restate our commitment to a peaceful solution to all the challenges facing our beloved country. As outlined during this year's Easter sermon, instability benefits no one. We urge our members to refrain from any actions and behaviour that may harm the good name of the ZCC by aligning it to a particular political view. Ours is to pray for a peaceful country, its leaders and institutions of state. Even under these current uncertain circumstances, it is still our firm belief that God knows best and we communicate with him through prayer. We remind all people that we are not to judge as there is only one judge, God. We urge all South Africans to pray to God for a stable nation. As the ZCC, we will also continue to set dedicated prayers for the leadership of this country to lead with the wisdom from God. South Africa is a unique country of people supposed to be united in their diversity amid all their clear challenges.
We have only one country and should therefore not destroy it. We wish all South Africans a peaceful election season and encourage all participants to campaign responsibly without denying anybody their freedom and rights. God bless South Africa.

Apply for smart ID online

Smart ID card applications can now be done online before verifying in person.
Smart ID card applications can now be done online before verifying in person.
A new government system, eChannel, will be part of the pilot smart ID card project, allowing citizens to apply for their cards online before going into a bank to provide fingerprints.
The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) is ready to go live in May, with the new offering allowing people to submit smart ID applications at banks, with First National Bank (FNB), Standard Bank and the South African Post Office signing up first.
President Jacob Zuma announced during his State of the Nation Address in February that, in an effort to accelerate the rollout of the new smart ID cards, government had partnered with local banks.

The DHA introduced the card, with security features, as part of its modernisation programme in 2013. More than one million cards have already been issued and government aims to issue another 1.6 million cards by the end of the 2014/15 financial year.
In addition to allowing smart ID applications via banks, the DHA will pilot its eChannel system which will allow citizens to apply for their smart ID cards online. This system, which the department hopes will lead to shorter queues, allows citizens to enter personal details digitally before going into the bank for fingerprint capturing and identification verification.
eChannel is part of the department's strategy to move services from paper to digital.
According to the government news agency Web site, Mpho Moloi, the department's chief director for channel management, said FNB and Standard Bank have signed a memorandum of understanding, and further agreements with Nedbank and Absa are being finalised. Both FNB and Standard Bank have eChannel sites ready to go live, which the department "envisages" happening sometime in May.
Moloi said a risk assessment has been done on the system to protect it from identity theft; however, "it remains an ongoing process. We are employing the best hackers to come attempt to hack the eChannel system to ensure our system is secure."
The pilot will run from May to July. In August, an assessment will be done to see if the system works, said Moloi.
The DHA hopes to replace 38 million green bar-coded ID books within the next eight years.
